Emergency in Myanmar: Amid the ongoing state of emergency in Myanmar, the junta has implemented compulsory military service for all youth. According to this, both men and women have to join the army compulsorily. Those who evaded recruitment could face three to five years in prison.

Myanmar's junta has announced a new conscription law mandating all young women and men to join the army amid the country's ongoing state of emergency. The military government said all men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 would have to serve for two years. The service could also be extended for a total of five years if the military insurgency continues, as the junta struggles to contain the armed insurgency. The junta said that under the new recruitment rules, doctors below the age of 45 will have to serve in the army for three years.

Myanmar's army junta has been facing armed protests across the country against its rule, which began in 2021 after it wrested power from the elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Last week, around 350 members of Myanmar's border guard police and soldiers fled to Bangladesh after fighting ethnic minority forces in the western state of Rakhine.

Who will get exemption from compulsory army recruitment?

Civil servants and students may be granted temporary leave under the Conscription Act while members engaged in religious activities may be exempted. Military Government Spokesman Major General Zoe Min Tun said that national security is everyone's responsibility that is why I want to tell everyone that the citizens of the country should serve in the army with pride.
