Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on Saturday (December 2) to discuss bilateral relations. The welfare of the Indian community in the oil-rich country was discussed.
Prime Minister Modi wrote on social media 'X' on Saturday, 'Had an opportunity to meet Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, Emir of Qatar at the COP28 Summit in Dubai. We had a good conversation on the prospect of bilateral partnership and the welfare of the Indian community in Qatar.'
Why is this meeting so important?
The meeting between the two leaders comes at a time when eight ex-Indian marines have been sentenced to death in Qatar. The Indian government is trying to repatriate these people and has appealed against the sentence in court. Now the meeting between the heads of the two countries is being considered very important.

Eight ex-servicemen of the Indian Navy were sentenced to death by a court in Qatar on November 26. On which the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that they are stunned by this decision. All legal options are being considered in the whole matter.
At that time, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said on Friday that the Indian government is making all possible efforts to bring back the ex-navies.
What is the matter?
The eight sailors, Indian nationals, were working for Al Dahra Company and were taken into custody in August last year for alleged espionage. However, Qatar has not officially clarified the allegations.
