Amid the ongoing campaign to identify illegal political parties involved in corruption, the Election Commission has once again demanded that it be given the power to de-recognize parties.

According to the election law, the Election Commission has the power to recognize a political party but it does not have the power to revoke the recognition of a political party.

During a meeting with the Union Legislative Secretary, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar demanded that the Election Commission be given the power to revoke the recognition of a political party.

The Election Commission has sought to empower the government under the Representation of the People Act to revoke the recognition of a political party for certain reasons.

The Election Commission further said that some people are also likely to form a political party to get income tax relief.

A senior Election Commission official said the Election Commission, which has the power to recognize a political party, should have the power to revoke the recognition of a political party in certain circumstances.

Recently, the Election Commission removed the names of 14 illegal political parties from its register. There are an estimated 200 illegal political parties in India. Eight legitimate political parties in the country are recognized as national parties. While 20 legitimate political parties have been recognized as regional parties.
