A woman has been reunited with her 3-year-old son by a court in Assam's Barpeta district. Who was separated from his mother immediately after birth. The issue arose due to misunderstanding of the nurse with 2 mothers of the same name admitted to the hospital. After which the mother reported the matter to the police and eventually the case was solved with the help of DNA investigation.

The Barpeta District and Sessions Judge on Friday ordered that the 3-year-old child be handed over to his biological mother Najma Khanam. Khan gave birth on May 3, 2019 at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital. They were admitted to the ICU after delivery and the newborn was kept in the children's room. The next day, the hospital administration informed Najma Khanam's husband that her son had died. The couple did not believe this, as their son was healthy at birth.

He has lodged a complaint against the hospital at Barpeta Sadar station. During the investigation, the police came to know that Najma Khatun of Gosaigam had also given birth to a child on that day, whose condition was very serious and she died shortly after. The nurse on duty became distraught with both the children and handed over the dead child to Najma Khanam's husband. Najma Khanam's family members claimed that she had given birth to a healthy baby, raising doubts about how she would die soon after.

The investigating officer in the case filed an application before the Barpeta court on October 8, 2020 for a DNA test of the newborn, Najma Khanum and her husband, Najma Khatun and her husband. The court accepted it. The DNA test report revealed that the baby belonged to Najam Khanam and her husband. The child was handed over to the original mother following a court order. The court said in the order that the child's biological parents were identified through DNA tests, which allowed him to be reunited with his real family.
