Supreme Court order: Uddhav government to prove majority on Thursday

Navi Mumbai, Ta. Wednesday, June 29, 2022

The Supreme Court in Maharashtra's Rajya Sabha passed its judgment late on Wednesday evening. The Supreme Court has upheld the order given to the Uddhav government for the floor test in view of several old decisions.

A two-judge vacation batch of the Supreme Court has allowed the Uddhav government to prove its majority in the Assembly tomorrow (Thursday) and rejected the Shiv Sena's plea.

The court also stipulated that the judgment of the writ petition filed against the disqualification of the rebel MLAs filed in the Supreme Court would be based on the floor test.

The Supreme Court is now also hearing the application of Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh to join tomorrow's floor test following the verdict of the floor test.

Governor orders floor test:

On Wednesday morning, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari announced the convening of a special session of the Legislative Assembly. The governor has made it clear that his agenda is a no-confidence motion against the chief minister. Floor tests can be done by 5:00 pm on Thursday.

"The state of politics in the region is not particularly good," the governor wrote in the letter. The 39 Shiv Sena MLAs have already spoken of splitting from the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance. While 7 independent MLAs have also written a letter talking about withdrawing their support to the Uddhav government.

Some BJP and Independent MLAs had yesterday raised the demand for floor tesni.

Will Uddhav resign?

According to several media reports, Uddhav, known as Maha Vikas Aghadi, may resign before the floor test if the verdict is not in favor of the government.

Even so, the rebellious candidates of the Eknath Shinde group could not be persuaded. The Shinde group is also talking about floor tests. More than 50 rebel Shiv Sena candidates are against the Uddhav government. If a floor test is held in such circumstances, the majority will not be in favor of the Uddhav government. Uddhav Thackeray is rumored to be resigning as chief minister to avoid a dilemma if hopes of a majority seem bleak.
