Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir dies, fight to free brother from Pakistani jail

Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur, who was killed in a Pakistani jail on espionage charges, died late Saturday night. Dalbir Kaur, 60, has died of cardiac arrest. Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Punjab, was given a long battle by his sister Dalbir Kaur to be released from a Pakistani jail and brought to India.

Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national, accidentally reached the Pakistan border on August 30, 1990. A Pakistani court convicted Sarabjit of terrorism and espionage and sentenced him to death in 1991. Sarabjit was also accused of conspiracy to carry out bomb blasts in Lahore and Faisalabad but India termed the entire case as a case of misidentification. However, later in 2008, the government imposed an indefinite ban on Sarabjit's execution. Sarabjit was later killed in an attack by prisoners in Lahore in April 2013.


Sarabjit claimed in Pakistan that he was a farmer and that his house was located near the border. He had strayed to the Pakistan border and was arrested. However, despite numerous arguments, he was sentenced to death.

Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur joined the BJP in December 2016. He came in contact with the BJP in 2005 when he was struggling to get his brother out of jail.

A film was also made in Bollywood based on the life of Sarabjit Singh. In that film, Sarabjit Singh was played by actor Randeep Hooda while his sister Dalbir Kaur was played by actress Aishwarya Rai.


Controversy over Dalbir Kaur

However, allegations surfaced that Dalbir was not in fact Sarabjit's cousin. Dalbir Kaur's husband Baldev Singh, who is lodged in jail, also alleged that the daughter he was taking advantage of by showing Sarabjit was in fact her daughter.
