The Assam Congress has registered an FIR against former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal for making controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad. The case was registered on Friday, said two leaders affiliated with the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). Protests are currently taking place in different parts of the country over the controversial remarks on Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH). An FIR has been registered after the Assam Congress Committee lodged a complaint at the Bhangagarh police station in Guwahati.

The Congress leaders said that the statements made by both the BJP leaders were not only insulting but also hurt the image and dignity of India. "Such statements always have an adverse and negative effect on our society," said Roman Chandra Borthakur, senior spokesperson of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. It is considered a crime.

The BJP had on June 5 suspended Nupur Sharma over controversial remarks and expelled Delhi unit media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal from the party.
