Biennial elections for 57 Rajya Sabha seats have been held in 15 states of the country. In Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, 41 candidates from different parties were elected unopposed. In the 16 Rajya Sabha elections held in Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Maharashtra, the BJP has won 9, the Congress 5 and the Shiv Sena-NCP 1-1.

Elections for the 16 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in these four states were inevitable. First of all, two media giants suddenly entered Haryana and Rajasthan as independent candidates. In addition, despite the lack of numbers in Karnataka, the ruling BJP, Congress and JD (S) tried their luck for the fourth seat. In Maharashtra, BJP and Shiv Sena had decided to field an additional candidate. In the midst of all this, allegations of horse trading, shifting of legislators to resorts, uninterrupted sittings, late night counting of votes, etc., gave an interesting twist to the Rajya Sabha election process in 4 states.
