Bangladesh: Fire kills 33 at container depot in Chittagong


- More than 450 people have been injured

A fire broke out at a private inland container depot (ICD) in Sitakunda sub-district of Chittagong in Bangladesh on Saturday night. So far 33 people have been confirmed dead and more than 450 injured in the accident.

The fire broke out inside the loading point of BM Container Depot in Kadmarasul area. According to a report, a fire broke out in the container depot due to chemicals and there was a terrible explosion during the firefighting operation. The fire became more frightening after the explosion.

The fire spread to other containers

The fire broke out around 9:00 p.m. At 11:45 a.m. there was a terrible explosion and the fire spread from one container to another due to the presence of chemicals in the containers.


Deployed 19 units of fire brigade

The fire disaster has injured more than 450 people and 350 of them are in CMCH. The blast shook the area and shattered the windows of people's homes. As many as 19 fire trucks have been dispatched to the spot and six ambulances have been deployed at the spot.

BM Container Depot has been established as an inland container depot and has been operational since May 2011. The death toll from the latest tragedy is still expected to rise.
