Asian Games double gold medalist Harichand dies at 69


- They won two gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok

Hoshiarpur: Harichand, who won two gold medals in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 18th Asian Games in long distance running in Bangkok, and Indian flag bearer during those games, died this morning (Monday) in his village Dhorewah in Honshiar district. They also won a gold medal in the 10,000m at the 19th Asian Championships. While winning a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters, they also competed in the 19th and 150th Olympic Games. He was also given the Arjuna Award.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mane also sent a message of condolence on the demise of the athlete. He said in the message that the two-time Honshiarpur gold medalist was equal to the athletic pride of India and he would be an inspiration to future generations.

Harisinh was the Commandant in the CRPF. He had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jalandhar for the past few days. Their cremation will take place tomorrow. The 18th will be held in Dhorewah village near Tanda in Honshiarpur district of Punjab.
