Amul wrote a letter to PM Modi to lift the ban on plastic straw

Ahmedabad. Thursday, June 9, 2022

Amul, India's largest milk cooperative, has written to the government urging it to suspend the ban on small plastic straws, saying the move would have a "negative impact" on farmers and milk consumption in the world's largest milk producer.

In a letter dated May 28, Amul called for reconsideration of the ban on straw for small packs of juice and dairy products, which will be banned from July 1. Market experts estimate that the market size is around 79 790 million. Amul currently has a large market in this segment and fears of losses due to the ban in the near future.

Not only Amul but the government's decision will hit global drink beverage companies, including PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.

In the letter, Amul's managing director R.S. Sodhi pleaded on behalf of Amul, which has a market of 8 8 billion, to help promote the consumption of straw milk. He has endorsed the government's ban on pollution, single-use plastics and urged the government to postpone the decision for one year in view of various aspects.

The relief sought from the government will be a boon for the country's 100 million dairy farmers, but Sodhi said if the government does not provide relief, Amul will have to sell the pack without straw from July 1.

A person with direct knowledge of the matter said that Parle had also written a letter to the Government of India stating that there was not enough domestic production of alternative straws and imported paper and biodegradable variants were about 250% more expensive. Should.
