India will widen the road to Lipulekh Ghat to face China

Ladakh has been the scene of friction between India and China for the past two years and China is expanding its infrastructure along the border. As a result, India is also planning to widen the road to Lipulekh Ghat, a tri-junction with Nepal-China. However, Nepal is upset with India's decision.
The Government of India has started the work of widening the road in Lipulekh Ghat area in Uttarakhand. However, Nepal's ruling party and opposition have accused India's decision of undermining Nepal's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nepal claims the Lipulekh, Limpiyadhuri and Kalapa areas near the tri-junction with China. He had earlier released a political map to justify the claim.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a public function in Haldwani on December 20 that India had worked on the Tanakpur-Pithoragarh All Weather Road and paved the way for Lipulekh and work was now underway to move it forward. The coalition government of Nepal had earlier remained silent on the Prime Minister's statement, but the main ruling party, the Nepali Congress, has once again opposed India's plan. He objected to India's decision to expand the Lipulekh route. He also called on India to withdraw its troops from the region.
In fact, the construction of the road to Lipulekh Ghat near the tri-junction with China has created a political crisis for India along with Nepal. However, the Government of India insisted that this route is only being built on the route previously used by the devotees of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Under the present scheme, the existing road is being made walkable for the convenience of pilgrims, locals and traders. Nepal claims the Lipulekh and Kalapa areas in Uttarakhand while the area is under Indian administrative control.
