The need for children affected by the Koro epidemic needs to be addressed, said S Ravindra Bhat, a Supreme Court judge and chairman of the Supreme Court Juvenile Justice Committee. He said that steps need to be taken to ensure that such children are able to stand on their own two feet in the future.
The statement was made by Justice Bhat at a review meeting convened by the Committee to Protect Children to review the implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Prevention of Sexual Offenses Act.
The meeting also laid special emphasis on protection of orphaned and abandoned children. According to a statement issued by the committee, special attention needs to be paid to the mental health of children who have been the victims of sexual harassment.
There is also a need to develop special infrastructure and systems to help such children once the legal process is complete.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and UNICEF India.
