States allow CBI probe into selected cases on political issues: Center

New Delhi, Dt
Eight states in the country have withdrawn their general consent to investigate cases because they do not trust the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but they allow the CBI to investigate cases of their choice on political issues. This is a matter of concern, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Thursday.
In response to a sub-question during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions urged the political parties to conduct a moral self-examination on the issue. He said eight states in the country had withdrawn their general consent to the CBI, alleging that they did not trust the Central Bureau of Investigation, but allowed the CBI to investigate cases of their choice that were politically favorable to them.
Jitendra Singh said the matter showed that the states did not trust the CBI so they withdrew the general consent. But they have faith in the CBI when their adversity suits them. This emphasizes the need for comprehensive introspection in politics.
Citing the example of Gujarat, he said that before the year 2014, the CBI had registered several cases against the Gujarat government and its ministers and also filed cases against the then Chief Minister. However, the Gujarat government never once withdrew the general consent of the CBI. Instead, the state government co-operated with the central body in the investigation. This matter is very important. A few weeks ago, several states, including Kerala and West Bengal, withdrew their general consent to the CBI, alleging that the CBI was investigating for political revenge.
