Supreme Court refuses to stay municipal elections in Tripura

The TMC's application was rejected by the Supreme Court

BJP MLA gave a speech in the style of Taliban inciting violence? : Supreme Court question to government

New Delhi: On the issue of Tripura election violence, the Supreme Court has asked the state government whether the BJP MLA had given a speech in the style of Taliban inciting violence. If so, what action has been taken against him? Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for Tripura, claimed, "We do not think the speech was provocative."

At the same time, the Supreme Court had refused to stay the Tripura municipal elections. If we do not stand in this election, there will be no opposition in Tripura. It may be noted that the Supreme Court is hearing the TMC's contempt of court petition on the issue of election violence in Muni.

The TMC has claimed that the situation in Tripura is deteriorating despite the Supreme Court order. The court should take action against the Tripura authorities for contempt of court. The TMC, on the other hand, demanded that the Tripura elections be postponed in view of the violence.

However, the Supreme Court refused to stay the election. "If we stay the Tripura elections, it will send the wrong message," the apex court said. Canceling the election may be the last resort and we do not want to do that. If we do, it will send the wrong message or concept.

An application was filed in the Supreme Court by the TMC on the issue of law and order in Tripura and a stay on the elections was sought which was denied. It is to be noted that polling is to be held in Tripura for the 25th municipal elections. The court also said that it was not appropriate to grant stay at present as the election process has already started.
