New Delhi: The central government has reduced excise duty to reduce petrol and diesel prices. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Gadkari has said that if petrol and diesel were brought under GST, their prices could go down. According to the Union Minister, the imposition of GST on petrol and diesel will not only reduce the price of both but will also increase the revenue of the Central and State Governments.

Addressing a virtual event, Gadkari said that with the support of state governments, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would make efforts to bring petrol and diesel under GST.

He said the finance ministers of the state governments are also members of the GST council. Some states are opposed to bringing petrol and diesel under GST. Bringing petrol and diesel under GST would reduce taxes on them and increase the revenue of the Center and the states.

It may be recalled that the GST Council at its meeting on September 15 had decided to exclude petrol and diesel from the scope of GST. Asked about the reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively, Gadkari said the Center had taken a good step to provide relief to the common man.

"Just as the central government has reduced the excise duty to provide relief to the common man, we hope that the state governments will also reduce the VAT," he added. Which will bring more relief to the common man.

The central government has reduced the excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 and now the excise duty on petrol has come down to Rs 2.50 per liter. While the excise duty on diesel has been reduced by Rs 10, its excise duty has come down to Rs 71.50 per liter. In Delhi, VAT of Rs 2.5 per liter is levied on a liter of petrol and Rs 12.5 per liter on diesel.
