Oil tanker explosion in Sierra Leone: more than 100 killed

- 100 more injured, some in critical condition

- People who came to loot the oil leaking from the tanker after colliding with another vehicle were also injured

FREE TOWN: More than 100 people were killed and more than 100 injured when an oil tanker exploded after colliding with another vehicle late Friday night in Sierra Leone's capital, Free Town.

The death toll could rise further as the condition of some of the injured is critical, according to the hospital. According to witnesses, some of the bodies were taken to the families of the deceased for burial.

Burned cars and motorcycles were found on the road in East Free Town. Deputy Health Minister Amara Jambe said more than 100 injured were being treated at various hospitals and clinics.

The victims include those who came to loot the oil leaking from the wrecked tanker. It is worth mentioning that many people have been killed in tanker accidents in African countries in the past. The people who came to loot the oil became the victims of the explosion.

Earlier in 2013, a tanker explosion in Tanzania killed at least 40 people. A similar incident took place in 2015 in Mapkongo.
