It is imperative to protect the independence of the judiciary in the country: CJI

Justice should also be delivered to the poor

Constitutional court rulings have been instrumental in strengthening democracy

New Delhi: Chief Justice of the Supreme Court NV Ramanna has said that millions of people can learn about the Indian justice system through the work of trial courts and district judiciary. We must therefore protect the independence and integrity of the judiciary at all levels.

The Chief Justice said that the Indian judiciary has been at the forefront in shaping a welfare state. Judgments of the country's constitutional courts have made a significant contribution to strengthening social democracy.

The Chief Justice was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Legal Citizenship and Outreach Campaign organized by the National Legal Service. He said that despite being part of the welfare state, the beneficiaries were not getting the benefits at the desired level.

He added that people's aspirations to live a dignified life are often challenged. Poverty is one of the main reasons for this. We cannot imagine a self-governing judiciary without a strong judiciary at the local level.
