In India, an average of 31 children have committed suicide every day in 2020. According to experts, the children have taken this step because of the growing mental stress on children due to the Koro epidemic.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 11,396 children committed suicide in the country in 2020, an increase of 18 per cent over 2019. According to NCRB data, 9,613 children committed suicide in 2019 and 9,413 in 2018.

According to NCRB data, family problems (4,006), love relationships (1,337) and disease (1,327) were the main reasons for suicide among children under 18 years of age. The ideological reasons for some children's suicide were other reasons such as unemployment, bankruptcy, impotence and drug use.

According to experts, the closure of schools and sports activities due to the epidemic has adversely affected the mental and physical development of children.

Prabhat Kumar, deputy director of Save the Children, an NGO working for child protection, said that in addition to the closure of schools as a result of Kovid-19, the mental health of adults, including children, has been badly affected by social isolation.

"We as a society focus on the basics like building children's national education and physical health to build national human capital, but in the meantime we do not focus on supporting their mental health and social well-being," Kumar said. The steady rise in child suicide cases reflects the failure of the entire system. It is the collective responsibility of parents, families, neighbors and the government to create a conducive environment where children can look forward to their bright future and make their dreams come true.
