Dead man wins Bihar panchayat election

The death was reported while issuing a certificate of election victory

The candidate was killed 15 days before the election but this was concealed out of respect for the last will and testament

Jamui (Bihar): In the Panchayat elections in Bihar's Jamui, a dead person has won by riding on a wave of sympathy arising from his own death. The unusual incident took place in this poor district, 200 km from Patna, when certificates were being handed over to the winning candidates.

Khaira BDO Raghavendra Tripathi said that no information was found about Sohan Murmu, the winner from Ward No. 2 of Deepkarhar village in Khaira block. Further investigation revealed that Sohan died on November 6, 15 days before the polls.

The BDO further said that the family members of Sohan Murmu, who won by a margin of 28 votes against his rival, said that his last wish was to win the election. Following which, the family members did not inform the Election Commission about the death of Sohan Murmu.

The people of the village also supported Murmu's family in this matter. The people of the village respected his last wish and voted in his favor. Tripathi said no one was given a certificate of election victory. And we will write a letter to the Election Commission demanding cancellation of this election and holding of fresh elections.
