Supreme Court angry over governments' ploy to reduce pollution

Debates on TV seem to be spreading more pollution: Supreme Court knocks on trucks coming from outside Delhi No-entry, schools-colleges will also be closed till the 21st

The Center rejected the Supreme Court's offer of work from home in Delhi NCR

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has slammed governments and government officials over pollution, saying there is no point in stopping pollution and everything should be left to the apex court. On the other hand, in the wake of rising pollution in the Delhi NCR, the Center had said in the Supreme Court that the work-from-home rule could not be enforced at present.

However we are in favor of pooling cars to prevent pollution. The apex court had asked Delhi and the central government to consider work from home on which the Delhi government had agreed but the central government has refused to enforce the rules for central employees.

The Delhi government had proposed to shut down industries across the NCR and allow employees to work from home. The Center had rejected the apex court's proposal while the Haryana and Delhi governments said they were ready to comply with the order.

While the Punjab government has said that Punjab does not come under Delhi-NCR, it is ready to abide by the orders of the Supreme Court. On the other hand, the apex court expressed displeasure over the government's response and said that governments do not have the guts to prevent pollution. And all is to be dumped on the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, the apex court also slammed the TV debates, saying that these TV debates seem to be spreading more pollution. The court said those who are criticizing the pollution are sitting in five-star hotels and discussing burning straw.

The debates that take place on TV spread more pollution than others. Meanwhile, the Air Pollution Quality Management Commission (CAQM) has issued several orders to the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to address the air pollution crisis in and around Delhi.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting on pollution crisis in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday. The order advised Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to allow at least 50 per cent of employees to work from home till November 21. At the same time, except for trucks carrying essential goods, the rest of the trucks will not be allowed to enter Delhi till November 21.

Construction work on any building other than emergency services has been banned till the 21st. On the other hand, the Delhi-NCR governments have been directed to explicitly ban vehicles that are spreading pollution. Six of the 11 thermal plants within a 300 km radius of Delhi have been ordered to be shut down till November 30. Meanwhile, Delhi is in a state of lockdown due to air pollution and it has been decided to close schools and colleges till further orders.

Employees go to office in public transport: Centre's advice

The central government, meanwhile, rejected the Supreme Court's proposal from Work to Home to curb pollution. However, central employees have been advised to use less of their own vehicles and use public transport vehicles to reach the office. The central government has said that government employees should not use private or government vehicles and should use transport vehicles such as city buses, metro railways etc. Doing so will also help reduce the number of vehicles in Delhi.

During the court hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Center, said in the Supreme Court that burning of straw was not the only cause of pollution.
