New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the withdrawal of three controversial agricultural laws, saying the constitutional process for them would be completed in the winter session of Parliament.

Congratulating the nation on the occasion of Guruparva, the Prime Minister expressed his happiness over the inauguration of Kartarpur Corridor. "Today we have decided to withdraw the three agricultural laws and will complete the constitutional process in the winter session of Parliament starting later this month," he said in a national speech.

In this regard, observers believe that Modi may have taken this decision after the BJP's defeat in the recent by-elections and in view of the Assembly elections to be held in five states next year.

"When I was given the opportunity to serve the nation in 2014, the government gave top priority to the agriculture sector and the welfare of farmers," the Prime Minister said in his national address. The government, on the other hand, failed to explain the value of these agricultural laws to a section of farmers. So in the end it was decided to withdraw the law. "

"We have not only increased the minimum support purchase prices but also the number of government procurement centers for (grain) procurement," he added. Moreover, government purchases have broken the record of the last several decades.

The purpose of these agricultural laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers. It was to see if they could get a fair price for their produce, and get maximum options to sell their produce. ' He said the Prime Minister had defended the law but it was met with strong opposition from farmers and especially in and around Delhi and its border areas.

The Prime Minister said that there was a need for quadrilateral measures such as seeds, insurance (crop insurance), market and savings so that the condition of farmers could be improved. Even before this, many governments had struggled in this regard. This time too there was a lot of fuss in Parliament. The law was also welcomed by many farmers' organizations in different parts of the country. However, this is not the day to blame anyone. Let us be committed again for the welfare of the farmers. '

Rahul Gandhi tweeted about the withdrawal of these agricultural laws, saying, "The House of the breadwinner of the country has bowed its head. Congratulations on the victory against injustice, Jai Hind, Jai Kisano."

Arvind Kejriwal said, "What good news we got on this day of light. All three laws were repealed. However, the martyrdom of more than 500 farmers will be immortal. The next generation will remember. ' Navjot Sidhu said, "Withdrawal of agricultural laws is a step in the right direction ... Satyagraha of Kisan Morcha is a historic achievement. Your sacrifices have paid off. Now, accelerating agriculture in Punjab should be the top priority of the Punjab government.
