Accused sentenced to 7 years in prison in Upahar Cinema fire tragedy case


- Two other people, including a former court employee, were also jailed

- Delhi court sentenced accused Sushil and Gopal Ansal to Rs. Also hit a fine of Rs 2.5 crore

New Delhi: A Delhi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced real estate pioneers Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal to seven years in prison each for tampering with evidence in a fire that broke out at the Upahar Cinema in Delhi three years ago. It may be recalled that 4 people lost their lives in this fire accident.

All the accused have so far been out on bail but were taken into custody immediately after a court order today. The whole case was about serious tampering with the evidence of the tragedy and the Supreme Court also sentenced the Ansal brothers to two years in prison each.

However, considering the time spent by these accused in jail and each of them was fined Rs. He was released on condition of paying a fine of Rs 50 crore. The apex court had set a condition to build a trauma center in the capital out of the amount of their fine.
