The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will procure two counter drone systems at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore in the year 206-2, according to official documents.

The counter drone system will help locate and track drones, according to a document issued by AAI's Airport Systems Directorate.

According to official AAI documents, AAI will purchase two counter drone systems at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore in the year 206-2. In June this year, an illegal drone dropped two bombs on the Indian Air Force station at Jammu airport.

Regarding the attack in Jammu, Smit Shah, director of Partnerships, Drone Federation of India (DFI), said India needed to invest more in counter-drone research and technology and buy it in phases. Doing so would allow illegal drones and aircraft to take over.

He further said that there are very few companies in India that are investing and researching in counter drone technology. Counter drone technology uses radar, radio frequency devices, electro-optical methods and combined sensors. Which can prevent unnamed aerial vehicles.

In October 2016, the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued a policy document expressing concern over the challenges posed by illegal drones.

There are no official figures on how many drones are operating in India. There are an estimated four to six lakh drones in India. Most of the parts used in the manufacture of drones are imported from China and other countries.
