Water released from Mullaperiyar Dam, Red Alert in Idukki district of Kerala


The government of Tamil Nadu had released a quantity of water from the Mullaperiyar dam. Due to this, a red alert was issued in the lower Idukki district of Kerala. An official statement from the Kerala government said the water level in the dam had reached 12 feet.

It was then decided to release water from the dam run by the Tamil Nadu government. People living in low-lying areas of Kerala were warned as water was released from the 18-year-old dam. Many homes in the coastal areas were flooded.

However, no casualties were reported. People were evacuated to a safe place. The Tamil Nadu government said two gates of the Mulla Periyar Dam had been opened.
