Regional languages are not considered as a major subject in CBSE

- Clarification by CBSE on Channy's protest not to keep Punjabi as the main subject

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today (on 8-10) clarified that regional languages are kept in the section of 'Minor Subjects' in the first-term exams of Class 10 and 12.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channy had objected to not keeping Punjabi language as the main subject in the board. So this clarification was made by CBSE.

On the other hand, the Punjab Chief Minister vehemently opposed the decision of the CBSE, saying, "This is against the principles of federalism. It is also against the core of the federalism of the Constitution. At the same time, it deprives the youth of Punjab of their right to know their mother tongue. Therefore, I oppose the CBSE's bias against Punjab, "Charanjit Channy tweeted.

Responding to Channy's objection, a senior board official said it was common knowledge that the dates for the first term examinations of Std-10 and Std-12 had already been fixed and the classification of subjects would be based on the number of students appearing for the examination.

Whether the subject matter is important or not is the main subject or the decision is taken as a subsidiary (minor) subject but therefore the importance of that subject does not diminish. Not only Punjab but all the regional languages have been placed in the 'Minor Category'. Classification is largely based on 'managerial' simplicity. There is no place for discrimination or prejudice.

As per the announcement made by the board on Monday, the first term examinations of 10th standard will be held on. The examinations for the second standard 12 will be held on November 20. Will start from 1st December.
