Efforts are also underway to stabilize potato and tomato prices
At a time when prices of three vegetables - onion, potato and tomato - are on the rise, the Center has said that onion prices have been stabilized by issuing buffer stocks while efforts are on to reduce potato and tomato prices.
The central government has said that the issuance of buffer stock to keep onion prices stable was started in August. Onion prices in metro cities ranged from Rs 42 to Rs 57 on October 14 due to the government's efforts. The average price of onion across India is Rs 37.06.
In a statement, the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs said buffer stock has been issued in states where onion prices are higher than the national average. The ministry further said in a statement that as on October 12, 67,357 tonnes of onions had been shipped to markets in various cities across the country.
