Massive shooting at Nigerian mosque kills 18

Sexual violence on the rise in Nigeria

The assailant escaped by firing, police cordoned off the area and launched an investigation

Lagos: At least 18 people have been killed in an attack on a mosque in northern Nigeria. The attack took place at a mosque in a village near the Niger state of Nigeria. Here 18 people were killed by heavy firing by gunmen.

Alhas Isaah, chairman of the Sruthanik Mashegu government, said the gunman approached the mosque and suddenly opened fire on people who had come for prayers. Niger Police Commissioner Monde Kuryas said the incident took place between Sruthanik villagers and Fulani headers.

The number of such attacks is on the rise in Nigeria. The assailant who carried out the whole incident has fled the scene which is being searched. Sruthaniko claims that this fight of sexual violence is the result of years of struggle for water and land. Some members of the conflict-ridden Phulani community have taken up arms against the Hosa farming community.
