In 2020, 1.33 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents, the highest number of two-wheeler victims

A total of 3,7,4397 people were killed in road accidents in the country in the year 2020. Of these, 35 per cent were due to road accidents. However, the number of deaths in 2020 is lower than in 2019. In 2019, 4,21,104 people died in accidents.

According to the NCRB, which works under the Union Home Ministry, the death rate for the country's population was 27.7 per cent in 2020, up from 31.4 per cent in 2019. In 2020, there were 3,54,796 cases of road accidents in India in which 1,33,201 people were killed and 3,35,201 injured. According to the report, more than 60 per cent of road accidents were due to speeding. 75,333 people were killed and 2,09,736 injured in speeding accidents.

43.6 per cent two-wheeler riders:
According to the NCRB report, 43.6 per cent of road accident victims were two-wheeler riders alone, followed by cars, trucks or pickups and buses, respectively. Dangerous driving or overtaking accounted for 24.3 per cent of accidents with 35,219 deaths and 77,067 injuries.

Shockingly, bad weather was responsible for only 2.4 per cent of accidents. Of the total accidents in 2020, the highest number was 2,11,351 (59.6 per cent) in rural areas and 1,43,445 (40.4 per cent) in urban areas. In addition, 31.8 per cent of the total accidents occurred near residential areas.

A total of 13,018 train accidents occurred:
In 2020, a total of 13,018 railway accidents occurred in which 1,127 people were injured and 11,968 people died. About 70 percent of accidents are caused by falling off a train or being hit by a train on the track. 1,185 people were killed and 71 injured in 1,014 incidents while crossing the railway. Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of railway crossing accidents with 380 out of 1,014.
