Hunger is higher in India than in Pakistan or Bangladesh

New Delhi, Dt
The state of hunger or malnutrition in India has reached a 'warning' level. India has retreated for the second year in a row in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 and has slipped from 9th to 101st position in the list of 116 countries. Thus, the famine situation in India is even worse than its neighbors Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. In 2020, India's position in the GHI index improved from 108th to 9th position.
The Global Hunger Index, a website that tracks hunger and malnutrition around the world, released a list of 117 countries on Thursday, with 12 countries, including China, Brazil and Kuwait, topping the list with a score of less than five. The report, prepared by the Irish organization Concern Worldwide and the German organization Welt Hunger Hilf, described the state of hunger in India as "alarming".
In the year 2020, India was ranked 7th out of 108 countries. It is now ranked 101st in the list of 112 countries. India's GHI score has also dropped significantly. In the year 2000, this score was 7.5 per cent, which has come down to the range of 7.5 - 6.5 between 2014 and 2021.
GHI scores are calculated based on four factors. These include malnutrition, underweight children under five years of age who show severe malnutrition, children under five years of age who show severe underweight, severe malnutrition and infant mortality (under-five mortality rate).
According to the report, the proportion of children in India who are overweight has increased from 12.1 per cent in 2007-08 to 16.5 per cent between 2015-2020. Measures such as the lockdown following the Corona epidemic and epidemic in India have had a serious impact on people's income and health. The rate of weight gain is currently the highest in children worldwide, relative to their height.
India's neighbors Nepal (3), Bangladesh (4), Myanmar (21) and Pakistan (6) are in a "warning" position in the GHI index, but they are in a much better position than India, the report said. However, in India, malnutrition has been found to improve due to under-five mortality, weight gain in children and malnutrition.
According to the report, the fight against hunger has been horribly pushed aside during the Corona epidemic around the world. According to the GHI's current estimates, the world, and especially the six countries, will fail to meet the target of reducing hunger by 2020.
