Eleven out of 17 districts in Kerala have been hit by heavy rains and floods. The meteorological department has issued an alert for heavy rains in 11 districts for two-three days.
The death toll in the rainy season has risen to six. So far many people have been injured in various accidents. Numerous villages are still without contact. Relief is being provided in such villages with the help of Air Force personnel.
An exercise has been launched to evacuate those trapped in the floods. In this too the help of the army is being sought.
Roads were closed due to landslides in many places. The process was also underway to open the road. Thirteen bodies have been recovered from the landslide debris in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation in a telephone conversation with the Chief Minister of the state.
A red alert has been issued as the surface of 10 demos in the state has reached alarming levels. The water level of Idukki Dam has reached 4 feet. Thousands of people have been evacuated from low-lying areas. The government had urged pilgrims not to come to the Sabarimala temple.
The meteorological department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the state till October 6, causing panic among the people.
