A Rs 6,550 crore tunnel will be built below the Brahmaputra to fight China

New Delhi: In view of China's aggressive stance on Arunachal Pradesh, the government plans to build a tunnel under the Brahmaputra river in Assam. This will enable the Indian Army to move easily along the Indo-China border. However, the tunnel will not only facilitate the movement of troops but also change the situation in Assam as a whole. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed the tunnel under the Brahmaputra river with senior officials of the Border Road Organization (BRO). During the discussion, Additional DG PKH Singh gave a presentation on the proposed tunnel.

The proposed tunnel will be over the Brahmaputra river from Jamugurihat in the north to Silghat on the south bank. The cost of this tunnel will be Rs 2,50 crore. It has been approved by the Assam government.

The Chief Minister of Assam said that the proposed tunnel could change the whole scenario of communication in Assam. Earlier, the Assam government had said in the assembly that China has five roads connecting the border with Arunachal Pradesh, but India has the only road through Bombadilla.

"Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat told me that he would discuss the project with the defense minister," he said. He has also asked me to discuss this with Rajnath Singh. This is a priority project for the Indian Army. If we get an engineering plan for the construction of the tunnel, we can build two more tunnels.
