Imran Khan's agreement with China for four nuclear power plants in Pakistan

The deal raises fears of a nuclear arms race and controversy around the world

The Times of Israel claims that China and Pakistan have signed a new ten-year nuclear deal

Tel Aviv: Under all circumstances, China and Pakistan, allies of the United States, have signed a new nuclear deal for ten years, which could lead to a global nuclear race and controversy, Fabian Bosart said in his blog in The Times of Israel.

This blog states that this nuclear deal is terrible. On September 8, 2021, an agreement was reached between the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission of Pakistan (PAEC) and China's Zhoguan Cooperation to enhance nuclear energy cooperation. The agreement was finalized at a high-level meeting on 20 August 2021. This agreement made in virtual mode will be valid for ten years.

The agreement is believed to cover matters such as nuclear technology transfer, uranium mining and processing of nuclear fuel supplies and the construction of a research reactor. As a result, Pakistan will be able to increase the number of its nuclear weapons.

Bossart said in his blog that the addition of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal would make China more effective in countering India's military might. The 2021 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty covers the construction, maintenance and disposal of nuclear power reactors.

Given Pakistan's past in this case, the possibility of re-processing materials being used to make nuclear warheads seems high. The agreement emphasizes cooperation in building all future nuclear power projects in Pakistan.

Of the four new plants to be built, two are in Karachi and two are in Muzaffarpur. The plants will be built under the engineering procurement and construction mode using Chinese Hualong One Pressurized Water Reaction-100 technology.

According to a report in The Times of Israel, the site of the nuclear power plant to be built at Muzaffarpur has been identified on the banks of the Tansa-Panjanad Link Canal in Kot Addu tehsil, 32 km from Muzaffargarh in Punjab.

In addition to building and maintaining these four plants, China will also be involved in the maintenance and operation of all nuclear power plants in Pakistan.

China will also be responsible for providing refueling outages, technical upgrades and spare parts to Pakistan's nuclear power plants. The supplementary agreements required to cross the main agreement will also be made in the future, the blog said.
