Millions of students in the country work hard to get admission in colleges on the basis of merit: Court

Admission without merit to five students in 2016 at LN Medical College Hospital and Research Center, Bhopal

New Delhi: Millions of students are working hard to get admission in colleges on the basis of merit while on the other hand, back-to-back admissions in colleges, including medical, are taking place, the Delhi High Court has said.

The High Court made the remarks while dismissing the appeals of five students who were admitted to LN Medical College Hospital in Bhopal in 2016, except for participating in the Centralized Counseling conducted by the Department of Medical Education (DME).

However, the Supreme Court has directed that in all government and private medical colleges, admission should be given only through a centralized counseling system based on the result of the NIT.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued Letters of Discharge to five applicants in April, 2017 and even after several communications, the medical college and students did not pay attention to the matter.

The college continued to treat applicants as its own students, allowing them to attend courses and even allowing them to sit for exams. The students, meanwhile, appealed to the court to quash the discharge letters issued by MCI. However, a single-judge bench rejected the petition. The students then filed an appeal to challenge the single judge's ruling.

However, a bench comprising Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Jasmit Singh also dismissed the appeal. The bench in its judgment said that admissions in closed colleges, including medical, should be stopped. While tens of millions of students are working hard to get admission on the basis of merit, such closed doors must be closed in any case.
