1.38 crore lightning strikes in the country in two and a half years, an average of four deaths per day


Rising temperatures are the main cause of more lightning strikes

New Delhi: Many people are dying due to lightning in India. Lightning strikes, especially during monsoons, are killing an average of more than four people a day in the country. In the last two and a half years, more than one and a half crore incidents of lightning have occurred in the country.

According to the meteorological department, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have the highest number of deaths due to lightning. In a single year, 1611 people have been killed in various lightning strikes across the country. These figures are between April 2020 and March 31, 2021.

Bihar ranks first among the states with the highest number of deaths due to lightning. A total of 401 people have lost their lives in various lightning strikes in Bihar between April 2020 and March 2021. While 228 people were killed in Madhya Pradesh, 283 in Uttar Pradesh, 156 in Odisha, 132 in Jharkhand and 72 in Chhattisgarh.

Similarly, 58 people have died in Maharashtra and 54 in Karnataka. According to the meteorological department, 47.69 lakh lightning strikes have been reported in various states in the country in the year 2019. This has increased to 63 lakh in the year 2020 and has come down to 27.87 lakh by June this year.

That is 1.38 crore lightning strikes in the last two and a half years. Damini has developed a mobile app that deals with lightning strikes. According to experts, the incidence of lightning is increasing due to rising global temperatures. That is, global warming is directly related to lightning.
