Western nations accept Taliban domination of Afghan soil: Germany

Washington, Thursday, August 26, 2021

The United States and its allies have discussed the steps needed to be taken before the Taliban regime in Afghanistan can gain political recognition from the world's nations. If such measures are not taken, foreign aid to the Afghan nation will be cut off.

The meeting of the Group of Seven (G-7) nations on Tuesday focused mainly on the withdrawal of foreign troops and their security. However, the G-7 leaders also discussed the issue of withholding foreign aid, which Afghanistan desperately needs to put pressure on the Taliban to ensure the safety of foreigners and Afghans living on Afghan soil.

The United States has set an August 31 deadline to withdraw from Afghanistan, which it is sticking to. This return will be completed in the next few days.

There have been growing reports of Taliban retaliation against Afghans, as well as threats against Afghans seeking to migrate abroad, raising fears of a Taliban attack on those with ties to outside powers.

"Even after the German troops leave Afghanistan, our country will continue to try to protect the local people," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The army has rescued 200 people. Western nations need to acknowledge the Taliban's dominance over Afghanistan and Germany will negotiate with the Taliban for the safety of the people, Angela added.

"NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) nations need to make efforts to ensure that Afghanistan does not again become a safe haven for terrorists," he said.
