The CBI on Thursday launched a major crackdown on post-election violence in West Bengal and registered nine cases. It is learned that all the 4 units of CBI are sending their teams from Kolkata to the respective crime sites. In addition, some more cases are being registered and some of them have been handed over by the state government. A five-member bench of the Kolkata High Court has handed over the probe into alleged rape and murder cases following the Assembly elections in West Bengal earlier this year.

On August 19, the Kolkata High Court shocked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by handing over the probe into the post-election violence to the CBI. The High Court said in its order that the CBI would investigate only in the court's monitoring. The High Court said the murder and misdemeanor cases would be investigated by the CBI, while other cases would be investigated by the SIT.

In its report, the Human Rights Commission's inquiry committee blamed the Mamata Banerjee government. The commission said in its report that cases like rape and murder should be investigated by the CBI and the cases should be heard outside Bengal. While other cases should be investigated by SIT.
