Madras High Court stays Centre's decision to reserve 10 per cent seats for EWS in medical

Chennai: Controversy is raging over reserves. In it, the Madras High Court said that the growing trend of reserves was strengthening rather than eradicating the caste system. The High Court was hearing the case of reservation on medical seats in the All India quota category. During which this statement was given by the judges.

During the hearing, a bench of the Madras High Court said that the current activities were strengthening the caste system instead of eradicating it. The reserve is being extended indefinitely while the reserve was only for a certain period of time. Reserves were also applied to eliminate inequality in a democracy.

The age of a country cannot be linked to the age of a human being but in 70 years we should be more mature. The whole concept of reservation is wrong. At the same time, the High Court had rejected the 10 per cent quota for the economically as well as the socially weaker sections in MBBS admission under AIQ. The High Court said that following the 10 per cent reservation, the 50 per cent quota limit would be abolished which was not appropriate.

On July 30, 2021, the BJP-led central government announced that 27 per cent medical seats would be reserved for OBCs and 10 per cent for the economically weaker sections i.e. EWS. The Madras High Court of Tamil Nadu said that 27 per cent reservation in medical seats is allowed for OBC students but the additional 10 per cent reservation for EWS for these seats is not acceptable without the permission of the Supreme Court.

The central government's decision was challenged by the DMK in the Madras High Court. At the same time, 50 per cent reservation was demanded for OBCs as all the seats belong to government colleges. In view of the petition, the Madras High Court had issued the statement on the reservation, saying that the Centre's decision to reserve 10 per cent EWS in medical meetings is stayed till the Supreme Court approves it.
