Petrol bomb attack on Meghalaya CM Konrad Sangma's residence, curfew in Shillong


- Violence is on the rise in Meghalaya following the death of former rebel leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhu.

An unidentified miscreant attacked Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad K on Sunday night. Sangma's residence was attacked with a petrol bomb. At around 10:15 pm, rioters hurled two bottles of petrol at the CM's private residence at Third Mile in Upper Shillong, police said. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, a senior police official in the district said.

The first bottle was thrown in the front of the premises while the second bottle was thrown in the back. However, the guard immediately put out the fire. The state government has imposed curfew in Shillong after vandalism and arson in the state capital and surrounding areas on Independence Day and mobile internet services have been shut down in at least 4 districts.

Violence has escalated in Meghalaya following the death of former rebel leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhu. The miscreants hurled petrol bombs at the CM's residence in Limerick, 3 miles above Shillong. A complete curfew has been imposed in Shillong following the violent incidents. Internet services have been blocked in several other areas of the state. The curfew will remain in force till 5:00 am on August 17, the order issued by the state government said.

Violence has escalated since the death of former rebel leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhu. State Home Minister Lakhan Rimbui resigned on Sunday evening amid deteriorating situation in the state. "I am saddened by the incident in which Chesterfield was killed by police during a raid after proceedings against the rule of law," Rimbui wrote in a letter to CM Sangma.
