India can get first woman CJI, Center agrees on names of 9 judges of Supreme Court Collegium


- Justice Nagaratna may become the first woman Chief Justice of India and she can hold the post from 25th September to 29th October 2027

The Central Government has approved the appointment of 9 judges sent by the Supreme Court Collegium. These 9 judges also include the names of 3 women judges. One of them could also be India's first woman Chief Justice in the future. Among the names recommended by the collegium are Karnataka High Court Justice BV Nagaratna, Telangana High Court Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Gujarat High Court Justice Bella Trivedi.

Apart from that, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Vikram Nath, Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, City Ravi Kumar (Judge in Kerala High Court) and MM Sundar are among the judges. There are currently 24 judges in the Supreme Court. Even after the appointment of 9 judges, one post will remain vacant in the apex court.

Among the names recommended by the Collegium, Justice Nagaratna could be the first woman Chief Justice of India. However, he can hold the post from 25 September to 29 October 2027. The Collegium in the Supreme Court comprised Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Uday U Lalit, AM Khanwilkar, Dhananjay Y Chandrachud and L Nageshwar Rao.
