Amid deteriorating security at Afghanistan's capital Kabul airport, India on Thursday airlifted nine people, including eight Indians and 11 Nepalese nationals, from its airport to New Delhi.

Sources close to the mission to evacuate civilians from Afghanistan said that more than 150 people were expected to board the Indian Air Force's C-17 aircraft, but only six were able to reach India. The rest of the people were detained by the Taliban in Kabul. Earlier, the Taliban had warned countries, including the United States, not to take Afghan nationals abroad. In addition, India's campaign to bring Indian nationals still trapped in Afghanistan will become dangerous after Thursday's suicide attack at Kabul airport.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Thursday morning that eight Indians and 11 Nepalese nationals had left Kabul for New Delhi as part of Operation Devi Shakti. The security situation at Kabul airport has deteriorated further as thousands of people have gathered outside Kabul airport in hopes of seeking refuge abroad for fear of the Taliban regime. More than 200 people have been brought to India from Kabul under Operation Devi Shakti since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15.
