Police have detained 19 beggars from a local monastery in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, a Tibetan living in India said. Another 40 people were arrested during a search of homes conducted by the administration.

The move comes as Beijing has stepped up its campaign to punish Tibetans for possessing all banned photos, including pictures of the Dalai Lama. All of those arrested are reportedly being held at the Cershol County Police Station.

In addition to the arrests, authorities also held a meeting in the area in which people were threatened not to keep pictures of the Dalai Lama and not to share any information about him on their mobile phones.

Chinese authorities have arrested two 19-year-old Tibetan students for opposing Beijing's plan to make Chinese the only medium of instruction in schools. Chinese President Xi Jinping's plan is seen as an exercise in consolidating his hold on the Tibet Autonomous Region.

It is learned that both Guldrak and Yangrik students were talking on social media about the scheme, which has been in force since September. Both are being held at the Darlag County Police Station.
