The matter of ban on slaughterhouse in Haridwar reached the High Court

Democracy means protecting minorities, civility is determined by dealing with them.

Haridwar: The government has banned slaughterhouses in Haridwar. The case has now reached the Uttarakhand High Court. As a result, the High Court questioned whether the government would decide what people should eat or not. The court said that the observation of civility is based on the treatment of minorities.

A resident of Mangalore town had challenged in the High Court the government's decision to close the abattoir in Haridwar. During the hearing, the High Court questioned the government on whether the people have the right to decide their own food or whether the state government would decide.

A bench of Chief Justice RS Chauhan and Justice Alok Kumar Varma said that democracy means protecting minorities, the assessment of civility can only be determined by the way minorities are treated.

The court said the ban imposed in Haridwar raises the question of the extent to which the state can decide the options of the citizens. The petition claims that the ban was imposed in March in violation of people's right to privacy, right to life, freedom to practice their own religious customs.
