Twitter must follow the new IT rules, you can't take as much time as you would like

New Delhi, Dt

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday slammed Twitter for its reluctance to comply with the central government's new IT rules. A bench of Justice Rekha Palli warned the Twitter lawyer, "Come up with a clear answer at the next hearing, otherwise your trouble will increase." On the other hand, the Karnataka High Court has criticized the Ghaziabad police for investigating Twitter India's role in the vandalism of a video of a Muslim elder being killed in Ghaziabad, saying it had no interest in the matter.

A Delhi High Court bench had objected to the provision of incomplete information regarding the appointment of a local prosecutor (RGO) on an interim basis. Hearing the plea of petitioner and advocate Amit Acharya, the Delhi High Court said that Twitter had appointed only one interim RGO and did not tell the court on May 31 that the appointment was made on an interim basis. Now that the RGO has resigned on June 21, why haven't you appointed another officer in these 15 days? The bench said that if Twitter felt that it could take as much time as it wanted to implement the new IT regulations, it would not be possible in India. The court will not allow them to do so.

After the bench's stern stance, Twitter admitted that it has not appointed any RGO or nodal officer at present. He also admitted that Twitter has not yet complied with the new IT rules, but that Twitter is in the process of appointing an officer. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General from the Center Chetan Sharma said the new IT rules came into force on February 9 and were given three months to comply, which ended on May 9. We welcome Twitter to do business in India, but they have to abide by the rules of the Indian government and the court cannot give them any protection.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has criticized the Ghaziabad police for investigating the viral video of a Muslim elder being killed in Ghaziabad, saying in fact the police had no interest in investigating the matter. Judge G. Narendra's bench questioned the police that Twitter India and Twitter Inc. are two separate companies. You have not investigated the role of Twitter India in viral videos. On what basis can you say that Twitter India has any role in viral videos?
