New Delhi, July 27, 2021, Tuesday

Ongoing tensions over the border issue between Assam and Mizoram have finally turned violent. For the first time in India's history, there has been a shootout between police in two states

Mizoram police personnel and rioters opened fire on Assam police yesterday, killing six personnel. Another 50 have been injured.

After that, a tussle broke out between the chief ministers of the two states on Twitter. Assam Chief Minister Hemat Biswa Sarma has even posted a video alleging that Mizoma Jawans and Assam police celebrated the deaths of policemen after firing by rioters.

The video posted by the Assam Chief Minister shows the people of Mizoram welcoming the firing squad wearing garlands and giving them food. Hemant Sarma said that six brave Assam police personnel have given their lives to protect their border.

Assam police, meanwhile, say officials from both the states were talking about the border, Mizoram police officials were involved in the meeting and at that time stone pelting from Mizoram and later firing started.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram Home Minister alleged that 200 Assam police personnel crossed the CRPF personnel post at the border, damaged the Mizoram police post and fired teargas shells at the unarmed civilians of Mizoram. Which injured many civilians.

There is a 164 km long border between Assam and Mizoram and it was speeded up in August last year and most recently in February. The controversy has escalated since Assam police began evacuating camps in Mizoram, claiming pressure on their land.
