In the last six months, heroin worth Rs 600 crore was seized from Delhi airport

Rising demand for banned substance in India worrisome: Customs official

New Delhi: Customs officials have seized over Rs 600 crore worth of smuggled heroin from an international airport here in the last six months. A total of 20 accused, including 18 foreigners and two Indians, have been arrested in 14 cases registered between December 2020 and June this year.

The foreign accused include six Afghans, while the other 12 accused are from African countries, including Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malani and South Africa. The recent seizures are the result of increased seizure operations by customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport, the official said.

This success is the result of the collective efforts (team efforts) of all the employees, including the senior customs officer, he added. The large-scale seizures reflect the growing demand in India for the banned substance, which is worrying, especially when regular international flights are delayed due to the Corona, he said.
