Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui did not die from a crossfire in Afghanistan, nor was it a security breach. In fact the Taliban killed him very brutally after finding out his identity. The revelation was made in an American magazine on Thursday.

Siddiqui, 38, went to cover the ongoing civil war in Afghanistan. He was killed while covering an ongoing clash between Taliban and Afghan troops at Spin Boldak in Kandahar. According to the Washington Examiner, Siddiqui was in the Spin Boldak area with the Afghan National Army team. The area is adjacent to Pakistan. The Taliban attacked the team at a time when they were a short distance from the custom post. The commander and some of the jawans were separated from Siddiqui and only 3 people survived with him.

Siddiqui suffered bullet wounds during the attack so he went with his team to a local mosque for first aid. A journalist attacked the Taliban as soon as word spread that he was in the mosque. The Taliban reportedly attacked the mosque only because Siddiqui was present.

Siddiqui was reportedly alive until he was taken hostage by the Taliban. The Taliban confirmed his identity and then killed him. The Afghan team commander and other teammates were killed in an attempt to save Siddiqui.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, wrote that he saw pictures of Siddiqui widely published on social media. Also reviewed other photos and a video made available by a source in the Government of India. It was found that the Taliban had beaten Siddiqui around his head and shot him in the body.
