Delayed monsoon demand hits all-time high with 197.06 gigawatts

New Delhi: Demand for power reached an all-time high of 197.06 gigawatts on Tuesday as the monsoon was delayed and high temperatures were observed in several states, along with restrictions on corona. At 11.43 am, the country had a total power demand of 1,97,060 MW, the highest ever, the energy ministry said in a tweet. Despite such record power demand, it was satisfied.

Last month, on June 30, the peak power demand was 191.51 gigawatts, an increase of 16 per cent over the June 2020 demand of 164.94 megawatts. Peak power demand in June 2019 was 184.45 gigawatts. On July 5, 2016, peak power demand reached 192.16 gigawatts, according to ministry figures. With this, it surpassed the figure of 191.51 MW recorded on June 30. Now, in the near future, power demand is likely to exceed 200 gigawatts or two lakh megawatts, Energy Minister R.K. Singh expressed. In January, Singh tweeted that at 9.42 am on January 28, power demand and supply had reached a new level of 1,88,452 MW. If it continues to grow at the same rate, we will soon surpass the demand of two lakh megawatts.
