Banerjee government to provide security cover to Suvendu in West Bengal: Calcutta High Court

Kolkata, Saturday 3 July 2021

Political turmoil continues in West Bengal after the Assembly elections. The Calcutta High Court has also directed the Mamata Banerjee government to provide security to Suvendu Adhikari after hearing petitions relating to post-assembly violence.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the state government to provide security to BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari while hearing the case.

The Calcutta High Court said the Home Ministry had given cover to the Z-category security officer Suvendu by the Central Security Force.

The state government then informed the High Court that the Suvendu officer was being cared for only on the basis of Z-category security as per the Yellow Book by the West Bengal government. The Directorate Security report states that the officer is already provided state security for the pilot, route lining and seats.

In fact, the security provided by West Bengal to the Suvendu officer was withdrawn on May 18. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari then approached the High Court on the issue, asking the state government why the state had withdrawn Suvendu Adhikari's security.
