World War II: America will find its missing soldiers in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, 31 May 2021 Monday

The U.S. Department of Defense has stepped up efforts to find the remains of more than 400 of its soldiers who went missing in India during World War II. For this, it has teamed up with the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar. NFSU experts will assist another organization called the DPAA, which operates under the U.S. Department of Defense. The DPAA keeps track of the whereabouts of soldiers lost and captured during the war.

Dr. Gargi Jani, DPAA's Mission Project Manager at NFSU, said all possible help would be found in locating the remains of the missing American soldiers.

Dr Gargi said the agency's teams would try to locate and retrieve the remains of soldiers missing during previous US conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and the Gulf War in Iraq.

During World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War, 81,800 U.S. troops went missing, of which 400 went missing in India. NFSU will do its best to help DPAA in its work in scientific and logistical terms, Dr. Gargi added.
